ミューラー兄弟の手掛けた作品は、近年評価が高まっている。ラリック、ガレ、ドーム兄弟の名に隠れるような形で、知る人ぞ知る存在あったが、その技術や芸術性はやはり卓越していることは明らかである。
本作品のガラスシェードには、色の違うガラスを溶け込ませる「ヴィトリフィカシオン」技法が駆使され、ランプをつけると炎が揺らめいているような幻惑的な表情へと変化する。光の効果によって表情を一変させる効果は、電気が市民の家庭にまで行き渡ってこそできた、かつてない表現として驚きとともに非常にもてはやされ、本作品のような各種照明機器はアールヌーヴォー芸術を代表する表現形態のひとつとなった。
アールヌーヴォーの特徴である美しい流線形、植物をモチーフとした金属製のアーム。工業製品でありながら芸術性も高く、電気スタンドという20世紀初頭では新しい製品であることも、アールヌーヴォー“新しい芸術”と呼ばれるにふさわしい。
当時、本作品のようなテーブルランプも大量に生産されたが、大量に消費される運命にあったため、保存状態よく伝えられる可能性が低く、それゆえに貴重である。
ミューラー兄弟の手掛ける商品は、ガラス製品にとどまらず、電気スタンド、シャンデリア、ペンダントライトなどの電気製品の種類も豊富で、金属部分も合わせて手掛けるため、製品の品質の高さを誇り名品を多く生産した。
Beautiful streamlined shapes characteristic of art nouveau and a metal arm with the motif of a plant. Although industrial goods, it has a high artistic quality. It is also a new product at the beginning of the 20th century called a desk lamp. It deserves to be called art nouveau (“new art”).
Table lamps like this product were produced in great quantities at that time. However, as they were destined to be consumed in great quantities, there was little possibility of them being passed down in a well-preserved condition. That makes them valuable.
The products handled by the Muller Brothers were not limited to glass goods. They handled a wide variety of electrical products including desk lamps, chandeliers and pendant lights. They also worked with metal parts, so they produced many famous products with pride in their high quality.
The estimation of the pieces handled by the Muller Brothers has been growing in recent years. They were overshadowed by the names such as Lalique, Galle and Daum Brothers. So they were known only to those in the know. Nevertheless, it is clear that their techniques and artistry were outstanding.
The vitrification technique in which glass with different colors is melted into each other is well-used in the glass shade of this piece. Accordingly, when you turn on the lamp, it switches to a fascinating expression like a flickering flame. The effect in which the effect of the light completely changes the expression was extravagantly praised with astonishment as an unprecedented expression that was only possible because electricity had spread to the homes of citizens. Various lighting devices like this piece were one form of expression that represent art nouveau.
