当館が所蔵している「駒ヶ岳」と同様、「ひまわり」も人気は高い。花の静物画ではやはり「薔薇」も数多く残されているものの、作者が大いに刺激を受けたゴッホへのオマージュの念を込めて、「ひまわり」も熱心に手掛けていたことは想像に難くない。
ゴッホが、唯一無二の独自の表現を続けたその姿勢に、作者は、誰に頼ることなく独学で絵画を極めた自らを重ねた。美しさを表現するよりも、生命の躍動と感動にこだわった中川一政の姿勢が、一連の「ひまわり」という作品たちに表れている。戦後から最晩年の1990年（平成2年）に至るまで、枯れることのない創作の熱意がキャンバスにぶつけられ、「ひまわり」は制作され続けた。
Sunflowers is very popular like the Mt. Komagatake in this museum’s collection. The artist left behind many pieces of roses in still life of flowers. Nevertheless, it is not hard to imagine that he worked with passion on Sunflowers as a homage to Van Gogh who greatly inspired him.
The artist taught himself until he mastered painting without relying on anyone with a stance to continue the unique expression as Van Gogh did. Kazumasa Nakagawa’s stance of being committed to the dynamics and excitement of life rather than expressing beauty appears in his series of Sunflowers pieces. His undying enthusiasm exploded on the canvas and he continued to produce Sunflowers from after the war to 1990 in the last years of his life.
