奥村土牛の名を世に知らしめた傑作「鳴門」が発表されたのが1959年（昭和34年）、3年後の1962年（昭和37年）の73歳の時には文化勲章を受章し、すでに輝かしい業績を上げているにも関わらず、奥村土牛は、このころから盛んに「富士」を描くようになっていった。
本作品「富士」に見られるように、「富士」の描き方は独特で、冠雪した頂(いただき)をクローズアップして画面いっぱいに描く構図となっている。
連作とも言えるほどに、この構図の「富士」の絵を繰り返し描き、山種美術館には傑作「富士宮の富士」が、皇居宮殿の回廊奥にも、ときに土牛の富士が掲げられ、その空間を格調高い雰囲気に満たしている。
Togyu Okumura’s masterpiece called Naruto that made his name known to the world was unveiled in 1959. He then received the Order of Culture three years later at the age of 73 in 1962. Although he had already produced wonderful achievements, Togyu Okumura started to actively draw Mt. Fuji from this time.
As you can see in this piece called Mt. Fuji, his way of drawing Mt. Fuji is unique. It has a composition in which the snow-capped summit is drawn large on the painting in closeup.
He repeatedly drew the painting of Mt. Fuji with this composition to the extent that it can be called a series. His masterpiece of Mt. Fuji in Fujinomiya is on display at Yamatane Museum of Art and Mt. Fuji is occasionally hung in the interior of a corridor in the Imperial Palace. At this time, the space is filled with a brilliant atmosphere.
