エミール・ガレは、アールヌーヴォーのガラス工芸の代名詞ともいえる、フランスのガラス工芸作家。1846年フランス北東部ナンシーで陶器と家具の工場を営む家に生まれる。
1878年のパリ万国博覧会に、「月光色ガラス」という淡い青色に発色するガラス器を出品し、銅賞に輝くと、ガレの研究は次々と実を結び次第にその名を知られるようになっていった。
本作品は「酸化腐食彫り」の技術が光る一品で、大きな花のシルエットが印象的である。その上からさらに細かい表情を生み出す加工を施している。科学的な知識と、芸術的な技術の両方がそろってこそ初めてできる逸品である。
Emile Galle was a French glass artist whose name is synonymous with art nouveau glass crafts. He was born into a family that ran a pottery and furniture factory in Nancy in the northeastern part of France in 1846.
He exhibited glassware that developed a pale blue color called moonlight colored glass at the Paris Expo in 1878. That won the bronze award. Galle’s research then continued to bear fruit in succession and his name became known with that.
This piece is an item that glitters with the oxidative corrosion carving technique. The silhouette of the large flower is striking. It has been processed to produce even more detailed expressions from above that. The piece is a fine item that could only be made for the first time with both scientific knowledge and artistic techniques.
