片岡球子は1905年（明治38年）北海道札幌市生まれ。
1950年あたりからそれまでの日本画らしい表現から劇的に変化し、1960年代に入ると、鮮烈な色彩を分厚く塗りこめ、デフォルメされた造形と装飾的な文様で、見るものを圧倒する表現へと発展した。
かつて“ゲテモノ”とまで揶揄された作品が、まるで、さなぎから生まれ変わった蝶のように、華麗な羽を大きく広げて鮮やかに姿を現すと、次第に世間からも注目され、評価も賛辞へと変わっていった。そして1989年（平成元年）には文化勲章を受章。
片岡球子は、その創作意欲は最後まで衰えることはなく、103歳の天寿を全うするまで、絵筆を下ろすことはなかった。
Tamako Kataoka was born in Sapporo, Hokkaido in 1905.
She made a dramatic switch from her typical Japanese painting expression she had employed up to then around 1950. In the 1960s, she evolved into an expression that overpowers what you see with deformed shapes and decorative patterns by thickly applying vivid colors.
Her pieces which had once been ridiculed as strange gradually started attracting attention from the world when she spread her splendid wings and made a brilliant appearance like a butterfly reborn from a chrysalis. The criticism also turned into praise. She was awarded the Order of Culture in 1989.
Tamako Kataoka’s creative urges did not diminish until the end. She did not stop painting until she passed away at the age of 103.
