豊かな色彩に描かれた、紫陽花と桃ふたつ。鮮やかな青に、背景の赤とのコントラストが映えている。
郷倉和子は1914年(大正3年)、東京生まれ。父は日本画家の郷倉千靭(せんじん)。1950年台後半になると、ピカソやマティスへの影響を受けて、写実的な表現を離れ、二次元的かつ装飾的な絵画表現へと進展する。
しかし、父郷倉千靭の死去の影響か、「幻想を突き詰めると抽象になってしまう」と、その進展に行き詰まりを痛感、1980年代半ばから自然表現への回帰へと舵を切る。
甍の上に広がる空に、可憐な花々を咲かせる樹の大枝を描く構想にたどり着くまでには、苦悩の日々があった。

Kazuko Gokura was born in Tokyo in 1914. Her father was a Japanese painter called Senjin Gokura. She lost interest in realistic expression due to the influence of Picasso and Matisse in the late 1950s. Her style evolved into one of two-dimensional and decorative painting expression.
However, perhaps due to the impact of the death of her father Senjin Gokura, she felt she had come to an impasse with that evolution: “if you pursue illusion, it will become abstract.” Accordingly, she returned to natural expression from the mid-1980s.
She underwent days of anguish until she arrived at the idea of drawing large branches of trees that bloom sweet flowers in the sky over tiled roofs.
