幻想的な風景画で知られる吉田善彦。一方で、静物画でも作者の特徴が発揮された。
見る角度によって表情が変わり、背景の金色に光り、ときにはシルエットがくっきりと浮かぶ。金箔を削り取る作業を施し、古めかしい表情を作り出している効果、いわゆる「吉田様式」のテクニックが、はっきりとした形で鑑賞できるのが、本作品の魅力のひとつである。
吉田善彦は1912年（大正元年）東京都品川区（当時は東京府荏原(えばら)郡）生まれ。日本画家・速水御舟(ぎょしゅう)に師事し、御舟急逝の後は、小林古径(こけい)に師事。その後法隆寺壁画模写事業を通して、安田靫彦(ゆきひこ)、橋本明治など巨匠たちとの交流があった。
Yoshihiko Yoshida is known for his wondrous landscape paintings. On the other hand, his characteristics also manifested in still life paintings.
The facial expressions change depending on the angle at which you view them. Light shines against the golden background. The silhouette occasionally reveals itself clearly. One of the attractions of this piece is that the effect of applying a process to shave off the gold leaf and then make time-worn facial expressions – that, is the Yoshida-style technique – can be viewed in a clear form.
Yoshihiko Yoshida was born in Shinagawa, Tokyo (then Ebara, Tokyo) in 1912. He studied under the Japanese painter Gyoshu Hayami. He then studied under Kokei Kobayashi after the sudden death of Gyoshu. After that, he had exchanges with Yukihiko Yasuda, Meiji Hashimoto and other masters through the project to reproduce frescos of Horyu-ji Temple.
