Kazumasa Nakagawa had a long history of painting before he passed away at the age of 97. In that time, his Mt. Komagatake series he worked on from his mid-70s was a collection of pieces widely regarded as masterpieces. The impressiveness from their quality and size are coupled with a period when he was at the height of his technical prowess.
You will see a complex overlap of various paints as you approach the pieces. The thickly painted feeling of mass overflows with a sense of presence like a colored relief.
Kazumasa Nakagawa set up a studio in Manazuru located between Odawara and Atami. He then moved from there to sketch in Hakone. He repeatedly painted Mt. Komagatake from Hakone. Therefore, the collection is characterized by the shape and composition of all the pieces looking similar.
