高山辰雄は1912年（明治45年）、大分県大分市生まれ。1931年（昭和6年）に現在の東京藝術学校である日本美術学校の日本画科に入学。1964年に「穹」で芸術選奨文部大臣賞、1970年には日本芸術大賞と、立て続けに受賞。
　高山辰雄が、初期の色彩豊かな時代を経て、生涯のテーマとなる「人間」「生命」という永遠のテーマを獲得するまでの彷徨の中に、そのテーマに寄り添いながらも、高山辰雄の“精神の宿り木”とでも言うような、少女や若い女性の横顔をモチーフとした作品を、1980年代、彼が60歳代後半から手掛けるようになる。
　薄暗い部屋の中にたたずむ、ひとりの若き女性。この作品には、その特徴がよく見られる佳作である。

Tatsuo Takayama was born in Oita, Oita Prefecture in 1912. He entered the Faculty of Japanese Paining in the Japanese Art School that is currently the Tokyo University of the Arts in 1931. He won the Arts Selection Minister of Education Award for Sky in 1964 and the Japan Arts Award in 1970 in quick succession.
Tatsuo Takayama wandered around until acquiring the eternal themes of “humankind” and “life” that served as the themes of his life after undergoing a colorful early period. During this, he started working from his late 60s in the 1980s on pieces with a motif of the profile of girls and young women who he called his “spiritual mistletoe” while staying close to those themes.
A single young woman loitering in a dim room. This is a fine piece that allows us to see those characteristics well.
