Toshio Matsuo continued to become an ever-greater success through his life. In particular, his peonies gained a strong reputation and he came to be known as Toshio Matsuo of Flowers. He drew large white peonies with a cat below that in his posthumous work called Genkoso. Animals were also an important motif for the artist.
He drew animals such as birds, cats, cows and fish. However, many of his pieces featured monkeys. You can see the technique of “pouring art” immersed with different concentrations and colors before the parts painted with a brush containing plenty of moisture dries.
He was born in Nagasaki, Nagasaki Prefecture in 1926. He worked for the post office for a while. However, he decided to pursue a career as a painter and then retired four years later. He gained a track record through the Japan Fine Arts Institute Exhibition winning the Arts Selection Newcomer Award in 1971, the Japan Fine Arts Institute Exhibition Minister of Education Award in 1975 and the Japan Art Academy Award in 1979.
