49歳で日本画家に転向するまで、「世界の動物」「世界の鳥」などの図鑑のイラストを手掛けるイラストレーターを生業としていたという、変わった経歴をもつ石田武。それがゆえに、描かれる動物の正確さには、目を見張るものがある。
1922年（大正11年）京都市の西陣織職人の家に生まれる。日本画や洋画も習っていたが、同校を卒業すると商社宣伝部に就職、その後兵役に従事する。戦後から児童図書のイラストを描き始め、やっと絵を制作することが仕事となる人生を歩み始めた。
三羽の鶴が冬木立を背景に飛翔する「好日」は、左右が反転しているバージョン、遅れる一羽が幼鳥のバージョンなど、複数の作例がある。

Takeshi Ishida has an unusual background. He worked as an illustrator involved in the illustration of Sekai no Dobutsu (Animals of the World), Sekai no Tori (Birds of the World) and other illustrated reference books until he switched to being a Japanese painter at the age of 49. Consequently, the accuracy of the animals he depicts will leave you amazed.
He was born into a Nishijin silk fabric craftsman family in Kyoto in 1922. He learned both Japanese painting and Western painting at school. However, after graduating, he got a job in the advertising department of a trading company and then later took up military service. He started drawing illustrations in children’s books after the war and finally began a life in which producing paintings was his job.
There are multiple examples in Good Day with three cranes flying against a background of a barren trees in winter: a version in which the left and right are reversed and a version in which one of the late cranes is a young bird.
