杉山寧は、1909年（明治42年）東京は浅草の生まれ。1928年（昭和3年）に東京美術学校に入学、松岡映(えい)丘(きゅう)に師事する一方で、山本丘人(きゅうじん)、高山辰雄らと「瑠爽画社(るそうがしゃ)」を創設、日本画の革新をめざした。
1964年（昭和39年）代表作「穹」は、宵闇に浮かび上がるスフィンクスの題材を、日本画では珍しいカンヴァスに描いている。徹底した写実、強調された立体感は、スーパーリアリズムも髣髴(ほうふつ)とさせる。
あまりなリアルな表現から生まれる幻想は、本作品にも宿る。二匹の鯉は、水に漂っているようで、不思議と宙に浮いているようにも見える。
1993年（平成5年）心不全のため、84歳でこの世を去った。

Yasushi Sugiyama was born in Asakusa, Tokyo in 1909. He entered the Tokyo School of Fine Arts in 1928 and studied under Eikyu Matsuoka. Meanwhile, he founded Rusogasha with Kyujin Yamamoto, Tatsuo Takayama and others under the aim of innovating Japanese painting.
He drew the theme of the Sphinx emerging at twilight on a canvas rare in Japanese painting for his masterpiece Sky in 1964. His thorough realism and emphasized three-dimensionality remind us of superrealism.
Illusions born from such realistic expressions dwell in this piece. The two carps seem to be drifting in the water while mysteriously floating in the air.
Yasushi Sugiyama passed away at the age of 84 due to heart failure in 1993.
