Yoshihiro Shimoda was born in Namerikawa, Toyama Prefecture in 1940. He moved to Tokyo and competed a master’s course at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. After that, instead of leaving the university, he was appointed a part-time lecturer. Unexpectedly, he blossomed as he had another talent as an educator from a young age.
Yoshihiro Shimoda expresses magnificent landscapes using realism with strongly contrasting colors in large paintings. On the other hand, it is very interesting that he has worked on many pieces depicting small animals as his pictures become smaller.
His masterpiece Mont Saint Michel reveals the attitude of the painter to challenge art with its impressive rough red sky. This lovely piece may also show a side of an educator who gently guides the younger generation.
